While there are legal definitions that separate whether a watch is water resistant or waterproof, what we really care about is wearing a watch all the time in our active lifestyles - and not having it ruined and rusted by water.
A watch can take in water in three areas: around the case back, crown, and/or crystal. When we add techy features to these three areas, we can dramatically reduce the chance of moisture getting inside and ruining the movement.
A water resistant watch is one with built-in features to keep moisture out of the case. A slim-cased dress watch with a small crown is water resistant in its brand new and perfect condition. This is because the vacuum inside the case creates a suction that gently pulls the crown into the case. This vacuum, along with a few good gaskets, keeps out a little water splashed from the sink or a garden hose. However, a little wear and tear quickly reduces the water resistancy, and one day, we look down and there are beads of moisture inside the crystal.
For more hearty water resistancy, a screw down crown and case back are needed. In this design, the crown becomes larger, has a sturdy gasket inside and screws down onto the case with a threaded tube to create a perfect seal. The case back also screws into the back of the case along with a gasket, and the crystal is sealed with yet another gasket. These features – screw down crowns, case backs and gaskets - create a seal that keeps water out of the watch and keep it trouble free.
Most of us do not ever deep dive, so the water resistancy of our watch is needed for showers, pools and outdoor activities. As we all plan our weekend and summer fun, the safest place to keep your watch is on your wrist, so choosing a water resistant timepiece becomes a necessity.
In today’s world, we all want and need a watch that we can wear without worrying about the risks of water damage. For many of us, our lives are more casual but very busy, relegating the dressy watches to the jewelry box. Thus, the sports watch becomes our choice for everyday wear.
