Every year, I travel to Basel, Switzerland, to attend Baselworld. This is a showcase for the finest watch and jewelry brands in the world. And this is where they unveil their new designs.
The show is held in large buildings that are spacious enough to hold multi-story stands allowing the designers to show off their pieces. These stands cost millions of dollars and take a full week to install. Incredibly, they are used just once a year in this mecca for watchmaking.
Watch buyers, tourists and watch lovers all mingle in the large aisles. Everyone can view the newest timepieces, but only buyers with appointments can enter those luxurious stands. Think of an international air show and the chalets they build for each corporation – or the Fort Worth Stock Show barns - those are both similar in size to the Baselworld designer stands.
Every space is professionally decorated. Nature abounds inside these showcases with huge potted trees, and beautiful, creative flower arrangements.
A number of watchmakers will debut their newest collections on their websites and social media this Thursday morning. Be sure and check out your favorite brands, and take a look at the timepieces everyone will be asking for this year. I’ll be sure and post some of my favorites as well.
