Summer is a time of lounging by the pool, taking a jet ski out on the lake, or diving into the ocean. Those activities are a wonderful way to unwind and recharge your batteries. But there are some tips you should keep in mind when it comes to your jewelry and timepieces:
- Take off all jewelry and watches before you enter water of any kind. And I do mean any kind. Did you know that pools and hot tubs contain chemicals that are abrasive to all metals and many gemstones? The chemicals can cause erosion, pitting, and discoloration. We have seen pitted wedding bands, pearls destroyed, and watch straps ruined – all due to chlorinated water.
- Saltwater can be just as harmful – and this includes perspiration. It can cause damage to watch case backs, watch straps, and sterling silver.
- Water activities can cause rings to slip off, earrings to disappear, and watches to fly off wrists.
I have always imagined the world’s oceans, lakes, and rivers holding a wealth of gold, diamonds, and timepieces. Eagle Mountain Lake would yield dozens of fine watches if we drained it!
We hope everyone enjoys their summer, and if you’re going to be in a pool, hot tub, lake, river, or ocean, please remove your jewelry and timepieces!
