In its 90th year, the Haltom family transferred ownership of Haltom’s Jewelers to Jack Miller. Born in 1952 in Sherman, Texas, Jack’s family moved to Fort Worth in 1958 to own and operate Edison’s Catalog Showroom. While Edison’s carried health and beauty products, small electrics, cameras, sporting goods, and luggage -- the store always had a strong fine jewelry presence.
Jack was raised in this business. When he was 12 years old, he helped his Dad by finding math mistakes in invoices and checks. A family with a strong work ethic, Ivan Miller brought home checks to review and sign on Sundays. With a card table set up in the living room and Patsy Cline on the hi-fidelity, Ivan paid Jack a quarter for each mistake he found. At 16, Jack began training at the diamond counter under the supervision of Mr. Weinberg. After one year at the University of Texas at Austin, he missed working in the family business and moved back to Fort Worth, working and attending TCU. He graduated in 1974 with a business degree and as President of Edison’s.
In 1983, at 31 years old, Jack Miller bought Haltom’s. With a wife, two kids, a mortgage, and a big bank loan, Jack was fearless and eager to own and operate a luxury jewelry store. Working quickly to stock the store for the holiday and restore shine to the Haltom’s brand, Jack printed a small catalog for December 1983. Enjoy some photos from then and now.
